Black Employee Sues Manager Over Hair & Skin Color Complaint

A San Diego man is suing sunglass company, Oakley, after his manager told him his skin color and hair color must be the same. Anthony Merriweather says that his manager said he was in violation of the company’s dress code policy because his hair was colored orange. Merriweather recorded the tense conversation, in it, his manager can be heard saying, “It’s not a natural hair color” and “it has to be close to your skin color.” Merriweather colored his hair orange as a tribute to his cousin who died from sickle cell anemia 8 years ago. "Having my hair orange, orange is my favorite color, so when I go out there you see my hair orange, you get to ask me why and I get to tell you about my cousin,” he told NBC 7, San Diego. California’s newly Crown Act protects those from discrimination in the workplace due to their natural hair. Merriweather is suing for harm, embarrassment, and severe emotional distress.
