On this episode of Whine Down, Jana Kramer and her husband Mike Caussin sit down with Rachel Uchitel. It’s a loaded interview: Rachel is famous for being “the other woman,” making headlines when she had an affair with Tiger Woods, while Jana and Mike have built their marriage back from the brink after Mike’s infidelities. Jana admits that she “hates” Rachel, but she knows it’s unfair; Rachel “represents all the women that I hate, that I’ve had to work past.” They talk with Rachel about how Dr. Drew helped her understand her love addiction, why she participated in the HBO Max documentary Tiger, and confront Jana’s misplaced anger with Rachel for an ultimately healing conversation.
Rachel’s name was all over the press when VH1 called in 2010 to get her on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew. Rachel initially wasn’t interested, because she’s “not really a drinker, I don’t have a substance abuse problem….I’m not an addict.” But she sat down with Dr. Drew and he told her she was a love addict. At first, she said it was “stupid and made-up,” but he went on to explain that because her father had died when she was young, she never knew unconditional love. On September 11th, her fiancé perished in the attacks on the World Trade Center, so she was again robbed of love. Her subsequent romances were marked with toxic melodrama and sometimes abuse; if she didn’t get a handle on her love addiction, Dr. Drew told her, she’d “never have a normal relationship with a man.”
Jana confesses to Rachel that she started the podcast hating her, but having a better understanding of her story changed that. Jana also identifies as a love addict, so she can sympathize with her struggles for intimacy and belonging. They talk about love and sex addiction, why women often bear the brunt of the anger from an affair, how they think they’ll talk to their children about these things, and so much more with raw sincerity and honesty. It’s a “huge lesson,” Jana says, to remember that “the other woman” is still a human being with their own story. Hear the whole candid conversation with Rachel Uchitel on this episode of Whine Down.
