Zach Braff & Donald Faison Talk ‘Scrubs,’ ‘Sesame Street,’ & Stanley Tucci

On this episode of Fake Doctors, Real Friends, Zach Braff and Donald Faison talk about the Scrubs episode “My Lucky Day,” where J.D. correctly diagnoses a patient with a rare condition, besting his mentor Dr. Cox; but later in the day, he makes a fatal error. They also get into Taylor Swift’s new album, Zach’s excitement about Michelle Branch following him on Twitter, the time Donald embarrassed himself in front of Stanley Tucci, and whether or not Zach could beat Brad Pitt in a foot race before they welcome Bob to the show, who loves Scrubs but would rather hear a little about their time on Sesame Street. They also reminisce about their favorite teachers, come up with a scheme to accidentally make a billion dollars like George Clooney, and compare their gym playlists (“Turn off DMX for one of your workouts and turn on some Avril Lavigne...just wait until you hear ‘Complicated’ with some BASS!” Zach enthuses).

Donald says this episode is about learning to be humble, and he likes that J.D. took a lot of strides to learn what he did wrong with the patient he loses; the fact that he cared enough to ask for insight and discover where he’d misstepped showed what a great doctor he truly was. Zach agrees, and adds that the show was often at its best when it shed its goofiness for a moment to have a “frank, emotional, but honest conversation,” such as his scene with Dr. Cox at the end of the episode. “There’s certain truths about being a human and being in love, and having best friends, and striving to do great both in life and in your job that are universal,” he says, “and the show really attempts to tease that out so we can share a common story.”

They note all the Spin City actors that did cameos on the show, like Alan Ruck and Richard Kind, and Zach offers up a piece of trivia that Richard is one of George Clooney’s best friends. That gets them talking about he famous story where George Clooney gave all his friends a million dollars, and how he made a billion dollars “by accident” when he started his tequila company. Zach doesn’t know why he and Donald haven’t released a liquor of some kind together, and right on the spot, they come up with their Fake Doctors label name and even write the commercial. Will it ever get off the ground? They also talk about David Copperfield’s tour bus, their baggy sweatpants, and Zach slipping a Seven reference into his Sesame Street episode; hear the whole hilarious conversation on this episode of Fake Doctors, Real Friends
